Description
Principle The state of a gas is determined by its temperature, pressure and amount of substance. In the limiting case of ideal gases, these state variables are related by a general equation of state. For a change of state under isochoric conditions, this equation becomes Amontons' law. This experiment investigates whether Amontons' law is valid for a constant amount of gas (air). Advantages Unique system: all gas laws can be measured with the same setup Very compact setup, can be stored on a shelf and is always ready for use Very clear: volume is read directly from the gas syringe, temperature and pressure are measured by sensors in real time Heating system integrated into the experimental setup Direct and versatile measurement with Cobra SMARTsense. Tasks For a constant amount of gas (air), investigate the relationship: Volume and pressure at constant temperature (Boyle's law), Volume and temperature at constant pressure (Gay-Lussac's law), Pressure and temperature at constant volume (Charles' (Amontons') law). Using the obtained relationships, calculate the universal gas constant, as well as the coefficient of thermal expansion, the coefficient of thermal stress, and the coefficient of volumetric compressibility. Learning objectives: Coefficient of thermal stress, General equation of state for ideal gases, Universal gas constant, Amonton's law. Software included. Computer not provided.
